The RTK Challenge

Bruce "RTK" Matson

Bruce Matson (Trail Name, “RTK”) has had a nearly life-long dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail.  Now, at 60 years old he has carved out the time and opportunity to attempt what is known as a “thru-hike” of the entire 2,190.9 miles of the AT from Georgia to Maine.  In appreciation for the blessings in his life, RTK has a strong desire to “give back.”  Thus, he decided to use his thru-hike to help raise money for the Trail itself – to help millions after him have the same opportunity to enjoy the AT.  Bruce, or RTK, has established a campaign to seek donations for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which is responsible for the day-to-day management of the A.T.   Bruce calls this campaign the “RTK AT Challenge” because he is also attempting to set a fundraising record.

Bruce’s Trail Name – “RTK” – comes from both the name of his website and the theme of his thru-hike: “Returning To Katahdin.”  After having been born and raised in the “North” (Connecticut) and after having learned to love the outdoors from hiking, backpacking and canoeing in New England (including two summers of guiding canoe trips in the North Maine Woods and climbing Mt. Katahdin), Bruce moved to the “South” (Virginia) for college and law school, met his wife Cheryl, and stayed to began a career and a family – and by his own words, has had a wonderful life.  In returning to Katahdin by way of the longest footpath in the world, Bruce will be reflecting upon that life as he retraces his earlier journey from North to South, from Connecticut to Virginia.

Bruce will be matching contributions dollar for dollar up to $100,000.
